UP Fine Arts professor rocks the Angono Petroglyphs in painting exhibit

The symbolic representations of the Angono Petroglyphs can be a narrative about parental love, and faith in the supernatural. And the frequently-described frog-like image in the cave engravings can be that of an infant trying to stretch out from a fetal position. Efforts to preserve and promote the archeological treasure often involve demystifying the 127 discernible figures carved across the 167-meter rock shelter found in Binangonan, Rizal. These late-Neolithic cave engravings, either of anthropomorphic or zoomorphic forms, have gained considerable recognition since their discovery by National Artist Carlos “Botong” Francisco in 1965. But such appreciation has not necessarily translated into sufficient support to preserve this National Cultural Treasure.

AXA ART features special installation 'Art is Fragile' in Art Basel Hong Kong 2015

AXA ART, the international art insurance specialist, announced it will host an installation entitled “Art is Fragile” during the Art Basel show in Hong Kong from March 15-17, 2015. The presentation will feature damaged and destroyed works of art, pulled from the specialty insurer’s claims portfolio.

As the Official Art Insurance Partner of Art Basel, AXA ART plays an important role in offering insights and generating discussion around the importance of art conservation. The lounge’s “Art is Fragile” theme serves to highlight various scenarios which can negatively impact the condition of art objects and offers useful information to aid collectors in preserving the condition and value of their prized works.

AXA ART is also pleased to announce a special collaboration with Lalique, a renowned French crystal and lifestyle luxury brand for the first time at the Art Basel show in Hong Kong. Alongside a crystal art piece entitled The Winged Victory of Samothrace produced in collaboration with the Yves Klein Foundation and Lalique Art, a few Art Deco inspired pieces by Lalique Maison will be on display.

For the first time at the show AXA ART will provide complimentary access to art conservators who will be available to answer collectors’ inquiries about conservation and discuss options for salvaging damaged artworks. Specific queries can be addressed by the conservators through a one-on-one discussion at AXA ART’s lounge during appointed hours. Tips on protecting your collection will also be aired on #AxaArtCares during the Art Basel show in Hong Kong.

Additionally, as a supplement to the in person advice from conservation experts, a handbook entitled "Caring for Your Collection" will be available in the lounge offering a compilation of useful risk management advice and important tips on:

  • Protecting collectibles against the most common causes of damage, including, water, accidental damage, fire and theft
  • Simple housekeeping tasks that can help mitigate accidental damage
  • Storage and art handling best practices for works on paper, photography, canvas, wood, glass and ceramics and much more.

In addition to the show & tell hours with art conservators, AXA ART VIP guided tours will be conducted in Mandarin, Cantonese and English by international AXA ART experts during the show.

AXA ART is also Art Basel’s official tour provider in Miami Beach, Basel and Hong Kong. These expert-led tours provide another level of insight and expertise enhancing the VIP experience of the show.

Jennifer Scally, Managing Director at AXA ART Asia, said, “Collectors devote considerable time and resources to seek out compelling works of art, to start or build their collections. Whether driven by passion, a sense of history or as a strategic step to diversify their investment portfolio, building a collection can be both exciting and rewarding. However, ownership comes with the responsibility to properly care for and preserve objects of art. This begins with being informed about the unique needs of your valuables, and AXA ART is proud to offer that to collectors and the art world.”

About AXA ART
International reach, unrivaled competence, and a high quality network of expert partners distinguish AXA ART, the only art insurance specialist in the world, from its generalist property insurance competitors. Over the past 50 years and well into the future, AXA ART has and will continue to redefine the manner in which it serves and services its museum, gallery, collector, and artist clients across the Americas, Asia and Europe, with a sincere consideration of the way valuable objects are insured and cultural patrimony is protected.
