Inaugural World Art Dubai opens April 8

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: World Art Dubai - a unique fusion of art, education and entertainment designed to unite global artists with Dubai’s international community – will be an event under Dubai Art Season, the month-long arts initiative by Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the Emirate’s dedicated authority for culture, arts and heritage, held across the city through diverse activities from March 14 to April 15.

Conceived to enrich Dubai’s cultural scene by delivering and maintaining a sustainable ecosystem of diverse arts events, Dubai Art Season strives to preserve aspects of Emirati heritage by nurturing local talents to enhance the city’s cultural diversity and social cohesion.

Organised by Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), World Art Dubai will house numerous works by leading Emirati artists in its affordable collection of several hundred modern and contemporary works – comprising paintings and prints, photography, sculpture and urban art elements – amassed from more than 100 international artists and galleries from over 25 countries. The debut event runs April 8-11 at DWTC.

“As Dubai’s newest art fair concept, World Art Dubai has been specifically created to cater to all art lovers, buyers and collectors. This will be an event of Dubai Art Season and has the potential to evolve a niche segment into a major annual exhibition that will further enhance the city’s growing creative landscape internationally,” said Lubna Ahmed Mohamed Alshamsi, Project Leader, Dubai Culture.

Having set its sights on attracting the region’s growing demographic of culturally-aware locals, expatriates and tourists, World Art Dubai will give budding and established collectors, as well as just the curious, the opportunity to explore, engage with and buy new art, join masterclasses and workshops, and experience art-house shorts, live music and street art demonstrations throughout its four-day schedule.

In a further coup for Dubai Art Season and the thousands of culturally-aware locals, expatriates and tourists expected to descend on World Art Dubai, New York City’s Emmanuel Fremin Gallery - one of the event’s leading international galleries - has confirmed it will showcase original works by musicians-turned photographers, Moby and Julian Lennon.

Moby will feature photographs from his macabre ‘Innocents’ collection – the signature print of which also featured on the cover of the electronica legend’s 2013 album of the same name. Shot in both natural and artificial environments, the collection features various hybrid human-animal characters with living human bodies, draped in white fabrics and with skulls or animal masks instead of heads.

Taken during his travels through Kenya and Ethiopia, Lennon’s prints hail from his recent ‘Horizons’ collection – a project based on marrying photography with philanthropy where the artist captured a wide variety of images of indigenous cultures to help raise awareness of their plights.

“In-line with Dubai Art Season’s strategy of integrating Dubai’s burgeoning arts and creative communities into the global art world, World Art Dubai will feature a leading line-up of local, regional and international galleries and artists offering original works for every budget,” said Trixie LohMirmand, Senior Vice President, Exhibitions & Events Management, DWTC. “With the collections of Julian and Moby joining works from artists and galleries from Argentina, Armenia Belgium and South Korea, to India, Iran, and Vietnam, World Art Dubai will diversify Dubai’s ever-expanding arts scene and further the development of a sustainable arts and cultural infrastructure.”

With a wide-ranging programme featuring numerous form-specific workshops, artist-led talks, seminars and dedicated educational platforms for children, World Art Dubai will also feature live music, DJs and hospitality areas.

The event debuts 8-11 April at DWTC.
